A substantial portion of my time is spent on mentoring. I started this formally in 2000, when I was contracted to provide support to new doctors in a neighboring town.
Doctors requiring a mentor may be recent graduates or immigrant doctors. I have also been a mentor to a fellow medical educator.
My duties involve teaching formal English language and vernacular English, introduction to the Australian medical system, and ensuring that correct charging of consultations is explained and demonstrated. I also provide assistance with personal matters, employment matters and examination preparation.
This is a new scheme starting in 2017, and I have volunteered to join as a Mentor for an ACRRM Fellowship Candidate.
